Please Stop Believing

Dear Music Supervisor for The Closer,

As a music fan I have embraced the fact that the studios behind TV's one hour dramas have decided to go green and reduce the number of pages in episode scripts by eliminating dialogue from the last five minutes of a show and replacing them with a montage. Often the music chosen is quite good and a few artists are even crediting these license opportunities with jump starting their careers, and for that, I applaud your work. But really, have new artists stopped sending you demos, or were you so inspired by the series finale of the Sopranos that you decided you just HAD to close your show with "Don't Stop Believing" as well?

I refuse to believe that an equal emotional response couldn't have been triggered from the use of a piece of music that wasn't just chosen as the soundtrack to what may just be one of the most controversial moments in the history of television.

Who Are You and Why Are You On My TV??

I watch more guilty pleasure reality TV than most people I know, or probably most people in general. Normally I find it mindlessly entertaining. I love Baldwin Hills, BET's take on Laguna Beach, and I even find myself occasionally watching Sunset Tan, because those Ollie girls are simultaneously hot and amusing. I watch the Simple Life to see how Paris and Nicole handle themselves at a summer camp, in part because I hear about them all the time, so I actually find it somewhat interesting to see them move and speak, rather than just viewing silent stills taken by the paparazzi. But recently there's been a new wave of reality TV - behind the scenes of the lives of people you've never heard of and really don't care about....

Katie & David is a show that follows a couple who are apparently famous in the UK. I'm an Anglophile and outside of seeing pictures of Katie on Perez Hilton's site I have no idea who she is. Sure, people across the pond watch the show, because they understand why she is often referred to as Jordan and not Katie (can someone please tell me).

Same goes for Victoria and David Beckham. Just because they moved to the US doesn't mean we suddenly care about them. No one in the States watches soccer, so I have no idea why Mr. Posh Spice is being payed $250 million over five years to play it in Los Angeles, and his wife hasn't done anything particularly relevant since she starred in Spice World. So why did NBC decide to devote an entire hour to their moving into a new home?

Don't we have our own B and C list celebrities to exploit? Can't we give Tori Spelling a show where she lives her dream of opening a bed and breakfast, or give her a brother a show where he just has to act like a moron? Oh... wait...
